Sacré Cœur

Sacré Cœur's architect, Paul Abadie, took inspiration from the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and Saint Mark's Basilica in Venice. The church's name is a dedication to the heart of Christ. The foundation was laid in 1875, the same year that the constitution of the French Third Republic came into being, resulting in the end of the Second Empire under Napoleon III. Commemorating this event, the basilica of Sacré Coeur was also dedicated to the memory of the victims of previous Franco-German wars.
Visitors should not miss Sacré Cœur's triple domed architecture — the main dome is 55 meters high and in good weather, you can enjoy views up to 40 kilometers away. Inside, highlights include works depicting Jesus Christ, Ludwig IX, and the patron saint of France, Jeanne d'Arc, all immortalized in mosaic.
