Attraction

Marienplatz

The skyline of Munich is distinguished by the historical buildings of Marienplatz. For example, there are the towers of the new and the old town halls and the towers of the Frauenkirche, whose onion-shaped domes are a classic symbol of the Bavarian capital. At the New Town Hall you can admire the Glockenspiel, with its famous 43 figures at 11 and 12 o'clock, and in the summer at 5pm. They depict a medieval jousting tournament and the traditional Bavarian Schäfflertanz in miniature form.
In the 19th century, the Old Town Hall served as the seat of the city administration. It is located on the east side of the Marienplatz and was built in Gothic style in the 15th century. The historic vaulted hall in the interior of the building is particularly worth seeing. Another landmark on the Marienplatz is “Old Peter,” which every guide will inevitably point out. This is the tower of St. Peter's Church, which is also one of the oldest churches in the city.
If you love good coffee and tasty confections, Marienplatz is the right place for you. Cafés such as the Café am Marienplatz, Café Rischart and Wörners Café are among the best places to spend a lazy – and delicious – afternoon.
