Houses of Parliament

The elaborate neo-Gothic turrets of the Houses of Parliament, located on the banks of the River Thames, are for many the most recognisable symbol of the United Kingdom. Considered the pinnacle of Victorian-era architecture, the UNESCO World Heritage site was constructed between 1840 and 1870 after a devastating fire destroyed much of the original building in 1834. As was typical of the Victorian era, the architects shunned the austere Tudor style of the original building in favour of a flamboyant neo-Gothic structure, topped off with the clock tower that houses Big Ben. The tower is almost 99 metres high, carrying the distinctive chimes of the immense bell far across London's rooftops.?With more than 1,100 rooms, 100 staircases and almost five kilometres of corridors, the Houses of Parliament is one of the largest buildings in England. In addition to the House of Commons and House of Lords - the country's two parliamentary chambers - the building also houses an extensive library and magnify
cently decorated rooms including the Prince's Chamber, Royal Gallery and Robing Room. The oldest section of the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Hall, which can be dated back to 1097 and survived the fire of 1834 largely intact. The Houses of Parliament can be visited with a guided tour.
