Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace was built in 1703 and initially served as the magnificent city residence of John Sheffield, the Duke of Buckingham. Some 60 years later the building passed into the hands of the British monarchy. Queen Victoria (ruled 1837-1901) was the first monarch to take up residence at Buckingham Palace in 1837. The marble Belle Époque facade is particularly noteworthy. The private gardens around Buckingham Palace are among the largest in London and feature a small lake fed by the waters of the Serpentine in nearby Hyde Park.?Visitors flock to Buckingham Palace in particular to witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony. With their famous black fur hats, the Queen's Guard are only seen to move during this ceremony - at other times they are required to remain completely stationary at their posts. On certain days of the year some rooms within Buckingham Palace are accessible to the public. During a tour of the royal rooms, visitors can admire precious antique pieces, the Windsor's Fabergé jewellery collection and the ballroom where state banquets are held.
